Ginger
We adopted Ginger the cat, age 7, who had lived in your shelter for several months after his owner died. We took him home to Fort Myers where he met the rest of our household—Kali the calico cat, age 7, Brinks, a black and white small cat age 1½, and Skeet the dog, a Bichon Frise age 12. We thought Ginger needed a more masculine name so we dubbed him “Mr. Gin-Gin.”
For awhile, Gin-Gin was very shy, spending most of his time under a bed in the guest bedroom. At one point we were thinking of returning him—but he heard us talking and made himself more available for play and stroking. Brinks, in particular, helped him by going under the bed with him and urging him to come out. He is still quite shy, but now comes out on his own and participates more in the household. He likes the kitchen particularly, as we keep cat food on the counter so the dog won’t eat it. At night he explores other rooms.
Here are some pictures of Gin-Gin. In one, he is lying on a chair near a window, and often looks out for squirrels, birds, and any other visitors. He has learned to use a cat flap that allows him access to the pool cage area, and he likes to walk around and listen to birds singing. However, he hasn’t caught onto the fact that the cat flap works two ways—so we have to let him in through a sliding door. But he’ll learn.
We thought you would like to hear about Mr. Gin-Gin’s new life.

2 years ago this August I came to your facility to look at a puppy that I saw on PetFinders. She was a Bloodhound and Black Lab mix and had the most adorable face. Little did I know what I would find. She had had Parvo and was being treated for Demodectic Mange when I saw her. I fell in love. Since she did have such a rough start I thought you might enjoy seeing what a beautiful girl she has turned out to be. She is very sweet, listens fairly well and loves to play. She is not perfect by any means, but of all the dogs I have owned she is the most special. Maya will be 2 this April and I have enclosed a couple of pictures for you. The first one was taken the week I brought her home, The second one was taken that Christmas (2008). She has a couple health issues but for the most part is a healthy, happy, 58 lb hound dog. Thank you for my baby, she is my world.

Chiquita
Hello, I just wanted to share a little something with your shelter.
I moved to Bradenton from Michigan in the Aug of 1996. I was living by myself, in my first year of college at Ringling School of Art & Design, without any family or friends nearby, so on Sept 26 of 1996 I decided to adopt a cat from your shelter. I remember you had a room full of cats with lots of cute little kittens and friendly cats all over the place ... I was having a hard time picking out who was going to be my new companion, so I asked which one had been there the longest and who was going to be hard for you to find a home for... I was led to Chiquita, a 5 year old who had been with you for 3 months or so - I specifically remember the card that said other animals - No & children - No... I had no intention of getting another animal, nor having kids... She was sitting in the back of the cage and looked annoyed that the door was opened. She let out a little meow when I picked her up & held her -- I knew then and there I had to get her out of there.
She stayed under the bed most of the time for the first couple of months, I knew she was coming out to eat and use the litter box, so I gave her time and let her adjust to her new home. Around Christmas time, I was sleeping on the couch and woke up to her laying next me... She slept next to me almost every night from then on.
She accompanied me on moves across the country twice (to California and back) along with some long road trips to MIchigan to visit family for summers. I figured out she spent about 10,000 miles traveling with me.
The part about her not liking other animals was true... My girlfriend and I moved in together with her two dogs, Chiquita wasn't a happy camper at first, but eventually she adjusted to the dogs and was very good ignoring them. I would occasionally come home and find her sleeping next to one of them, she would get up and move when she realized she was "caught". So much for not liking other animals.
Two and half years and ago I found two little kittens in our back yard, and I do mean "little" - the two would fit in one hand easily. I kept them in the garage and tried to find homes for them, all of the Tampa Bay area shelters were full and as it got chilly, they made their way into our home. Chiquita did a but of hissing at first, but she adjusted again and would tolerate the kittens, who of course were very intrigued by the older cat. As the kittens got bigger, Chiquita started playing with them and they all got along. And Chiquita seemed to have a new found spunk with the new cats in the house.
Unfortunately, Chiquita's health had been deteriorating over the last year - she couldn't jump any more and we had to hand feed her soft food. On March 30th, I made the hard decision to end her suffering and had to have her put to sleep.
I had 14 wonderful years with Chiquita, who was a great companion and friend to me. I hope every animal that you adopt out brings as much joy and happiness that Chiquita brought to my life and I just wanted to say Thank You.

Bear
To whom that are wondering, I just wanted to thank all of you for this wonderful little boy we adopted today. We brought him home today to meet his new family which consists of a mastiff x lab, a blue tick hound x lab, my husband, and our room mate. They are having the most wonderful time playing, napping, eating, drinking, playing, and more napping. We just though you might like to know that he is adapting well and they are getting along really well. Thanks again The Masels
